On the basis of the Roman arts documents, in which constant common elements appear, the typical Roman ship is similar to the Greek one. Ships provided with up to ten orders of rows were built.
Towers painted like stones and masts with square sails were fitted. At bow one little sloping mast with a little sail (the so called "artimone") was provided.The crew included both rowers and soldiers.
